School Profile

Introduction

Rubicon Outdoor Centre is a residential Outdoor Education School operated by the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD). It is located 130 Km northeast of Melbourne, close to the small township of Alexandra..

Rubicon Outdoor Centre has two campuses. The main campus is in the picturesque Rubicon Valley. The Royston campus is 13 km further into the Rubicon Ranges and is the overnight location for field study and other specialist programs.

 

Guiding Principles

The core activity for Rubicon is the provision of affordable high quality educational programs for school students and the provision of high quality resources for other client groups in an outdoor setting. Other clients may include community and corporate groups.

ROC Buildings

There is a strong focus that as a major stakeholder in the learning process; the students personal goals are the starting point for learning, with personal development being a key objective of the Centre. Accordingly, the principles of access for all, gender equality and drug education have been strategically incorporated into programs.

Rubicon is committed to the philosophy of experiential learning and world's best practices in programming.

Curriculum

Rubicon is primarily focussed on outdoor education programs for government school students, Year 7 to 12. Courses for government and corporate groups, recreational workers and tertiary students may be negotiated.

The outdoor environment is used as a medium for personal development, leadership and team-building through residential, single-day and off-campus programs.

Activities offered include: bush walking, canoeing, high ropes course, horse riding, mountain bike riding, rock climbing, rogaining, environmental studies, first aid and initiative activities. White water rafting, cross country skiing and snow camping are offered in the late autumn, winter and early spring seasons. The Centre has 9 teaching staff including a School Principal and Assistant Principal; a Business Manager and contract caterers, cleaners and maintenance personnel.

Facilities

Rubicon has varied accommodation facilities including two dormitories housing up to 20 students plus two staff each, and two smaller dormitories of 10 and 12 students plus staff.
Royston House is a further accommodation facility high in the Rubicon Ranges; we operate some specialist programs out of this facility - Royston Programs.
Specialist teaching equipment e.g. mountain bikes, rafts, tents, canoes and skis are supplied.
Internal transport is provided by buses and 4WD vehicles.

Future Development

In future years, the Centre will develop service delivery to Australian and international clients as demand arises.
Our focus will remain in serving the needs of Victorian Government School children.
